A little bit of Indonesia

September 2, 2010
by ramboestrada

This Saturday (4th September) we are bringing you a little bit of Indonesia. If you buy either of our two special tropical cocktails you will get an Indonesian treat for free. Due to advertising restrictions we can’t actually say what it is, but it’ll make you look as cool as the famous Indo baby below.

The cocktails are the tropical classic, the Pina Colalda and our own crazy invention the Sac Attack which contains vodka, grape juice, whole peeled grapes, soda and a dash of raspberry. Both cocktails will be $10 all night.

The fountain of youth

We recently picked up this classic 80′s Fountain programmable video system. Believe it or not, this thing was made right here in NZ. It says on the box that it is education and entertainment combined! I’m not sure about the education, but it certainly has been keeping us entertained. Natalie Leigh seems to be the master of it, I think she has secretly been in here training while we were on holiday. Come into Major Toms and battle her.

We currently only have an Olympic cartridge which has about 10 different versions of Pong. It’s super fun but we’re trying to track down Invaders. Anyone have the cartridge in a cupboard somewhere?

Divine Wonderland

The nightlife in Bali is pretty crazy. Generally bars will fall into 2 categories. Either sports bars that play any type of footy game and have a live band cranking covers of hard rock classics from Metallica, Guns n’ Roses and AC/DC but with thick Indonesian accents. Or super club style joints with oodles of flashy neon, weird Indo promo girls in lingere on stilts breathing fire with ridiculously loud Euro doof-doof music.

A friend tipped us off to a new bar in Seminyak called Divine Wonderland. It was a refreshing change with a super cool fit-out, indy tunes and a selection of tasty cocktails. They also have a set of the biggest armchairs we’ve ever seen. Definitely checking out if you are in Bali. You find them online at www.divinewonderland.com

It’s been amazing couple of weeks away but our holiday is drawing to an end. In a couple more days we’ll be returned to the cold of NZ, but we’ll be cranking that air-con at Major Toms when we open again on Friday (27th August). Just in case you weren’t jealous already, here’s some photos from our trip. See you this weekend.

New Furniture

by ramboestrada

Hamish recently inherited this epic weathered old  leather lounge suite from his Grandfathers estate.   And we’ve been holding a couple of other cute 2-seaters aside for a while waiting for an opportunity to change things round at Major Toms.

Today we set up a couple of new areas, but we just need one more thing to finish it off.  A bookshelf like this one, or similar to break up the 2 zones.  Needs to be backless.  Anyone seen one or even better have one they want to sell?  We’ve been hunting for weeks but can’t track one down.

Major Toms Strippers

July 19, 2010
by ramboestrada

One of the other bars in town gets strippers in on the last Tuesday of each month. That’s probably out of our budget, but a few of our regulars would probably do it for bar tab. What you reckon?

A tribute to the consultant

June 24, 2010
by ramboestrada

Over the last few days we’ve been working on extending our collage. It’s been fun picking all the images, and one thing we really wanted to get on the wall was some photos of Geoff Morrison. When we first took on the task of transforming a run down gold colored gaming lounge called “Our Place” we got our good buddy Ryan “Morrie” Morrison to act as project manager. The place was a dump, check out some of the before photos. Morrie’s old man Geoff was our consultant, every couple of days he’d drop by to laugh at us, point out what we’d done wrong and drop such classic lines as “You know every fuckin business that’s been in this building has gone broke”.

He was actually a big help in getting us up and running, and once we were open he loved to swing by, sit at the bar and tell us hilarious stories about growing up in the Mount back in the day, and the crazy surf trips he did with his mates in his youth. Unfortunately Geoff passed away earlier this year, so as a tribute to the consultant we’ve framed a page from his photo album of him and his buddies going on a surfari to Taranaki and a mission around Australia in a Combi.
